What is Endoscopy?
Upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy) is a procedure in which a thin, flexible camera (endoscope) is passed through the mouth into the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It provides direct visual assessment of the upper digestive tract lining and allows tissue sampling, therapeutic interventions, and accurate diagnosis that cannot be achieved with imaging alone.
Indications for Endoscopy
- Persistent or severe acid reflux or heartburn
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Upper abdominal pain or stomach disease investigation
- H pylori confirmation and biopsy
- Investigation of unexplained weight loss
- Upper GI bleeding or anaemia investigation
- Barrett's oesophagus surveillance
- Gastric and duodenal ulcer assessment and follow-up
What Endoscopy Can Treat
Beyond diagnosis, Dr Ayub Naich performs therapeutic endoscopy including oesophageal and gastric biopsy, endoscopic bleeding control (haemostasis), polyp detection and removal, dilation of strictures, and placement of gastric balloons for weight loss treatment.
What to Expect
Endoscopy is typically performed under sedation or light anaesthesia. The procedure takes 10 to 20 minutes. Patients are monitored for a short recovery period before discharge. Results and next steps are discussed with Dr Ayub Naich on the same day.
