What is GERD?
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition in which stomach acid frequently flows back into the oesophagus, irritating its lining. GERD is one of the most common digestive conditions in Pakistan and requires proper medical management to prevent complications including oesophagitis, Barrett's oesophagus, and in severe cases, oesophageal cancer.
Symptoms Treated
- Burning sensation in the chest, especially after meals or at night
- Regurgitation of food or sour liquid into the mouth
- Difficulty or pain on swallowing
- Sensation of a lump in the throat
- Chronic cough or hoarseness
- Worsening symptoms when lying down or bending over
Diagnosis and Investigation
Dr Ayub Naich may recommend upper GI endoscopy to assess oesophageal and stomach lining, check for complications, and exclude other conditions. This allows for accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment planning.
Treatment Approach
Treatment may include proton pump inhibitor therapy, H2 receptor antagonists, dietary and lifestyle modifications, and in appropriate cases, referral for surgical anti-reflux procedures. Regular follow-up and endoscopic surveillance where needed.
GERD and Obesity
There is a strong link between GERD and obesity. As a specialist in both gastroenterology and weight loss, Dr Ayub Naich can address both conditions together. Weight loss through gastric balloon or GLP1 treatment often significantly improves GERD symptoms.
