What is Fatty Liver Disease?
Fatty liver disease, also known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in liver cells. It is closely linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, making it one of the most common liver conditions in Lahore and Pakistan.
NAFLD exists on a spectrum from simple fat accumulation (steatosis) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which involves inflammation and can progress to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver failure if untreated.
Risk Factors
- Obesity or overweight (BMI above 25)
- Type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance
- High cholesterol or triglycerides
- Metabolic syndrome
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Unhealthy diet high in refined carbohydrates
Symptoms
Fatty liver disease often has no symptoms in early stages. When symptoms do occur, they may include fatigue, upper right abdominal discomfort, and abdominal swelling. Advanced disease may present with jaundice, leg swelling, and signs of liver failure.
Diagnosis and Monitoring
Dr Ayub Naich uses liver function tests, metabolic blood panel, liver ultrasound, and where needed, liver biopsy to assess severity and guide treatment. Regular monitoring is arranged for all patients with established fatty liver disease.
Treatment
The most effective treatment for fatty liver disease is weight loss. Losing 7 to 10 percent of body weight can significantly reduce liver fat and inflammation. Dr Ayub Naich's weight loss programs including gastric balloon and GLP1 weekly injection are highly effective in achieving and maintaining this weight loss. Additional treatment includes management of diabetes, cholesterol, and related metabolic conditions.
